Chip Buatan IBM Sanggup "Download" 500 Film HD per Detik

Peneliti IBM telah mengembangkan sebuah prototipe chip optik yang dapat mentransfer data hingga 1 Tbps (1 Terabit per second). Angka ini setara dengan kecepatan download 500 film kualitas HD (high definition) per detik. Chip yang dinamakan Holey Optochip, merupakan transceiver optik paralel yang terdiri dari dua pemancar penerima yang dirancang untuk menangani pengiriman data dalam jumlah besar.

Chip ini akan mendukung tenaga superkomputer masa depan dan aplikasi data center, dimana IBM telah menggunakan teknologi optiknya. Jaringan optik secara signifikan akan meningkatkan kecepatan transfer data dengan mempercepat aliran data menggunakan sinyal cahaya, bukan menggunakan elektron melalui kabel.
Para peneliti telah mencari cara untuk memanfaatkan sinyal optik bersamaan dengan teknik manufaktur chip yang rendah biaya dan tinggi volume. Para peneliti di laboratorium IBM membangun Holey Optochip dengan membentuk 48 lubang fabrikasi dalam chip CMOS standar berukuran 90 nanometer. Lubang-lubang tersebut dimanfaatkan untuk menambahkan 24 receiver dan 24 transmitter channel di belakang chip.
Para peneliti telah mengumumkan kehadiran prototipe Holey Optochip pada 8 Maret 2012 dalam acara Optical Fiber Communication Conference di Los Angeles, AS.  Pengumuman ini bertujuan untuk membuka kesempatan komersialisasi chip ini pada dekade berikutnya melalui kemitraan manufaktur.
